Heaven above, heaven below, stars above, stars below, all that is above also is below, grasp this and rejoice

 Carl Jung CW para 384

Psychological astrology has like the old Roman god Janus,a double face. It can provide a surgical scalpel which cuts through to the underlying motives, complexes, and family inheritance which lie beneath the manifest problems and difficulties which the individual faces; and it can also provide a lens through which can be viewed the teleology and purpose of our conflicts in context of the overall meaning of the individual's journey. Both faces ultimately turn toward a central mystery, the mystery of the human psyche of which astrology is both our oldest and our newest map.

Psychological Soul Centered Astrology

Remembering Who You Truly Are

What is Psychological Astrology?

Psychology from the Greek psykhe - breath, spirit, soul + logia - study of= the study of the Soul/Spirit

Astrology from the Greek astron - constellation, star
= The Study of the Constellations/Stars

Psychological astrology is a symbolic tool to assist you in living your life in alignment with your soul self, through an understanding of the configuration of the stars, at the instant of your birth. It consists of a unique blend of astrology, depth and transpersonal psychology and classical mythology. It can provide clarity and healing on many levels including the emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

Based on the premise that you chose a very particular instant in time, to come into this particular incarnation, on this particular planet, it follows that you chose the best birth chart, to help you fulfill your soul purpose. Psychological Astrology can help you remember what this purpose is, through interpreting the astrological symbols of your birth chart.

Your Birth Chart potentially offers you the following:

  • A symbolic map of your innate resources and potential. The nature of the planetary configurations in your chart describe the qualities you came into this world to experience and refine. Their position in your chart outline the arenas in your life which can most assist you in refining these qualities throughout your lifetime. They do not describe the actual circumstances you encounter or the choices you make. Free will enables you to live your chart out at its most expansive or most limited, at all times.

  • A bridging language between your conscious and unconscous, (both personal and collective), thereby offering you a gateway into your psyche. This enables you to reclaim the parts of yourself you have repressed and suppressed throughout your lifetime, freeing up creative energy for living.

  • A connection between the numinous and the earthly realms, assisting you in remaining connected with your oneness with all.

  • Information on relevant past life issues which can assist you in this lifetime.

  • the potential to experience more meaningful relationships through a deeper understanding, respect, acceptance and enjoyment of self and other.

The use of Mythology in Psychological Astrology

The universal nature of archetypes in myths reminds us that at our core, we are all on the same journey on this planet, as we seek to experience and manifest our spiritual self on the physical plane of matter, in our individual perfect manner. The stories in myths remind us of the main themes we are confronted with on our life journey. At its essence it is our search for love. Eventually we discover that love was always there, even when we weren't!

Movement

Life = movement and although your birth chart doesn't change in this lifetime, the planets continue to move in the sky, awakening particular parts of your chart and your life when they arrive. The sole purpose of the transits is to bring into your consciousness aspects of yourself. The outcome of the transits depends on the dynamic interaction between self and the visiting planetary energies.

Psychological Astrology is not predictive in terms of specific events, as these are determined by the choices you and others make each moment in time. However, it does describe the nature and timing of the planetary energies along your path. Familiarity with the individual nature of these energies can support you in working creatively with them in a growthful expansive manner. Psychological Astrology also offers you a timeline of the duration of particular energies in specific spheres of your life.

Threshold Crossings

The mythologian Joseph Campbell in his depiction of 'the Heroes Journey,' clearly described the universal major archetypal  'threshold crossings' we are likely to encounter on our journey on this planet. Astrologically these are visible as powerful planetary transits which occur at the same age for everyone. They invite us to stand at the crossroads of our life, offering us the opportunity to re-integrate lost aspects of ourselves, as we prepare to move consciously forward on our journey home. They include the Saturn Return at age 29, Midlife Transits from our late 30's to mid 40's and the Chiron Return at age 51.

In 1983 Liz Greene, who was one the main pioneer of Psychological Astrology, set up the Centre for Psychological Astrology (CPA) in London, UK, with the late  Howard Sasportas. This was the main training center for Psychological Astrology for many years. Liz Greene is currently teaching at the Sofia Project at the University of Wales at Lampeter, which offers degree courses  in Cosmology in Culture.
